January - February 2002
The group continued to meet and collect donations, and Annette continued to speak at various events. Briana and Patrick had a table at a film about Afghanistan at UCSB.
March 2002
Renee Bergan was chosen to be one of 14 women going on a Global Exchange tour to Afghanistan and Pakistan. The group raised about half of the money Renee needed to go. Other fundraising events included entertainment at Muddy Waters. |

Briana supported Renee throughout the trip, being in touch by satellite phone and forwarding EMails from Renee.

RAWA S.B. again participated in the International Women's Day march in downtown Santa Barbara, on March 8, with ten people wearing burqas (including one of our male members!)
SBORTY, the Jewish Youth Group, held a fundraiser for RAWA at Bee-Bop Burgers on March 18.
Upon Renee's return, she became very popular with the media, and was interviewed in the press, on radio and TV.

Renee and Briana appeared on "In Focus" with Tracy Lehr on KEYT Channel 3 TV.
April 9, 2002
Patrick McDowell organized a RAWA benefit at SoHo, this time with mostly male artists, with the theme of the music of George Harrison.

Renee spoke on a panel at UCSB on May 7, showing 20 minutes of her forthcoming film from her trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

May 31, 2002
A local Unitarian church hosted a benefit for RAWA, serving Middle Eastern food. Annette spoke and showed slides Renee took on her trip. Briana held a small bazaar of handicrafts.

Renee did another showing of her film at the UCSB MultiCultural Center, where we also had tables with Afghan goods for sale.
June 24, 2002
We debuted Renée Bergan's film, "Sadaa E Zan" at the Faulkner Gallery of the Downtown Santa Barbara Library. There was an overflow crowd, and many had to be turned away. We also held a small bazaar of Afghan Handicrafts. |

July-August, 2002
New supporters contributed significant sums to RAWA, raising the group to a new level.
September 2002
The group had a table at the Multi-Cultural Festival, and continued to receive large donations.
September 30, 2002
RAWA Supporters S.B. became a project of Social & Environmental Entrepreneurs (SEE) and thus gained 501(c)(3) Non-Profit status.

October 13, 2002
Briana attended the Bread & Roses fundraiser for The Fund for Santa Barbara at the Santa Barbara Women's Club at Rockwood.

October 18, 2002
The Board of Directors was formed, meeting at Briana's home.
President: Jill Littlewood, V.P.: Renee Bergan, Secretary: Sonja Downing, Treasurer: Ana Zaferris. Briana's title was changed from "President" to "Executive Director".
December 1, 2002
The third annual Holiday Bazaar was held, selling new handicrafts made by the Afghan women. Beads of the Earth and Oriental Rug Gallery again participated, and sales were again very good.

December 4, 2002
RAWA Supporters S.B. received a grant from The Fund for Santa Barbara. Briana accepted the grant award at the party at El Paseo Restaurant, accompanied by Ana Zaferris, Board Treasurer.
